Medieval Long-Cross Coins

Long cross coins are distinguished by the solid cross on their reverse which extends right to the edge of the coin. They were minted from 1279 till 1489 and cover the reigns of 11 kings from Edward I.

Round Half Pennies and Farthings were introduced alongside the Penny.

Diameters:
      Penny 19-22mm
      Half-penny 14-16mm
      Farthing 10-12mm

Towards the end of the 13th century, sterlings of the Low Countries began to circulate widely (but unofficially) in England, and this type, depicting the bust with a chaplet of roses, was colloquially known as a ’crockard’. Although, at this early period, there are distinct differences in appearance, the majority of the public would probably not readily distinguish it from a contemporary English penny of Edward I.
